Deepam Nite

DEWAN SERI MUTIARA - Deepam Nite was the highlighted event in 8th College this week where Indian culture and traditions were celebrated as well as experienced. There were many booths such as the Henna-drawing Booth, Puzzle Booth, Calligraphy Booth, Traditional Indian Food Booth etc. One of the great things about our college activities is that you often see residents of all races coming down and participating in all the fun and it really warms my heart to see other races try to understand and appreciate Indian culture.

Henna or Mehndi is a paste that is bought in a cone shaped tube and is made into designs for men and women. It was originally used for only women's palms and sometimes for men, but as time progressed, it is more natural for men to wear it. People usually apply Henna during special occasions such as weddings.

Girls were shown the proper way of wearing a sari. Awwww look at them being so pretty!

Traditional musical instruments from the Indian community were put on display and demonstrated to the participants.

Kolam is a form of painting that is drawn by using rice powder/chalk/chalk powder/white rock powder often using naturally/synthetically colored powders. The kolam shown here was done by one of our fellow Kinabaluans and she used "beras hancur". Isn't it just gorgeous?? Look at the way those beautiful colours blend together. It's truly stunning!

Wow, look at how many people turned up for Malam Deepam!

Other activities which were carried out were a puzzle competition, muruku-eating competition and sampling traditional Indian sweets. Festive Indian music was playing in the background the entire night to give the event a proper atmosphere. Day 2 of Deepam Nite will be reported tomorrow! Stay tuned for more updates on college activities!

Minggu Tautan Kinabalu 2014/2015

DEWAN SERI MUTIARA - Last night was the first day of Minggu Tautan Kinabalu (MTK) and boy, it was a good one! There were so many people of all races who turned up for the event and it was obvious that everyone was having fun. On Day 1 of MTK, there were booths with local delicacies and there were traditional games too. Some of the dishes available were Tang Yuan, Amplang, Laddu, and Pulut Panggang.

Tang yuan is a Chinese food made from glutinous rice flour mixed with a small amount of water to form balls and is then cooked and served in boiling water. Tang yuan can be either small or large, and filled or unfilled. They're sweet and have a soft, chewy texture. YUMMY!

Top left and bottom right are Laddu, a popular Indian ball-shaped sweet. Top right and bottom left are Palkova, is also an Indian sweet made from sugar and milk. Not pictured here is mysore pak which is an Indian sweet dish prepared in butter and it contains a lot of ghee, sugar and cardamom. Oooooh, gimme some sugar!

Pulut Panggang is from the Malay culture and it is a dish made with glutinous rice, coconut filling, and it's roasted over a fire. Ulam is a salad eaten with anchovy paste and popular amongst the Malays. Get in my tummy!

Several kinds of traditional games like Congkak, Batu Seremban, Jian Zi and Mipulos were enjoyed by the participants.

Some adorable 8th College residents taking part in Congkak, a mancala game of Malay origin.

Cute Kinabaluans playing a lovely game of Batu Seremban which can be played individually or in groups of 2 to 5 people.

A cool guy playing Jianzi, a traditional Chinese game where players must keep a shuttlecock in the air without using their hands.

Players engaged in a tough Mipulos battle (Mipulos is an arm-wrestling game which usually takes place during the Harvest Festival in Sabah).

All in all, it was a fantastic day for residents of Kolej Kinabalu to experience the cultures unfamiliar or unknown to them while tasting the dishes from different cultures. Malaysians can never turn down an opportunity for free food, can they? Let's conclude this post with an awesome selfie ;)

Sepetang Bersantai Di Gazebo

EIGHT COLLEGE: It was the day when 8th Residential College(RC) and 7th RC were gathered together to entertain us at the Gazebo. "Sepetang Bersantai Di Gazebo" event started at 5:30p.m.

Audience were asked to register at the counter before settling comfortably to their seats as merit marks will be given to those who attended.

We can see fresh faces coming from various RC to witness the performances from 8th and 7th RC. It was the support and unity from UM students that makes the event lively.

This was us while waiting for curtain to open.

They were our energetic emcees during the short event. The charisma they have together was natural as both of them are UM Radio's DJ as well.

The opening performance was none other than 8th RC's Gamelan Team. The traditional performance was full with grace and beautiful to watch.

Next performance was also by one of our 8th RC's pride, solo singing by Farahida. She chose to sing Taylor Swift's hit song, "You Belong With Me". She had all our feet tapping along with the song!

Later on,the friendly and down to earth Fansuri who often walked along 8th RC's corridor with a smile on his face, suprises us with his melodic voice, singing Jalinan.

We were later entertained by the talented Orchestra group from 7th RC, mixing both modern and traditional instruments to play Chinese songs.

Aside from that, 7th RC showed a another side of their ability with 7 charming men performing Acoustic songs. They delivered "Just The Way You Are" and "Sedang Ingin Bercinta" without flaws.

With the crowd cheering, Nazmie from 8th RC entered the stage in his character. He showed us the vulnerable side of him by reciting a poem dedicated to "Ibu". It was an emotional poem as the audience fell quiet, trying to catch his every word.

Still awed by the previous performance, Nurhamiza from 7th RC brings us back from the self-realisation moment by performing the song "Gerimis Mengundang".

She later invited her friend, Azrina to sing a duet "Renda Biru" on stage. Their voices were in tune and they sure had lots of fun on stage.

Last but not least, 7th RC introduced the audience with their debut Acapella group, Fawas, consisting 5 members. If girls from Pitch Perfect were good, these boys show that they are equally talented! We were honored to witness their first performance at Gazebo with the song "Anugerah Yang Indah"

It was a great performance by them to act as the closing number of the event.

By all means, both participants and audiences from various colleges showed equal enthusiasms and expertise. The audience dispersed with glee after the event ended.
